Why you keep starting over, and how weekly check-ins stop it

New programme, three good weeks, then life gets in the way and you are back at square one. Why it happens, and how a weekly check-in breaks the cycle.

2 min read

You start a new plan full of energy. The first couple of weeks go well. Then work gets busy, someone gets ill, you miss a session, then two, and before long you are back where you started, promising yourself that this time will be different.

If that sounds familiar, it is not because you lack willpower. It is because most plans are built for perfect weeks, and real life does not have many of those.

Why motivation runs out

Motivation is great for starting. It is no good for keeping going. It comes and goes with your mood, your sleep and your week. A plan that relies on you feeling motivated will fall over the first time you do not.

What keeps people going is a system: knowing what to do, having a plan that bends when life gets busy, and someone noticing when things slip. That is what I mean when I say your programme will not change your life, but the habits and the mindset you learn from coaching will.

What happens at a weekly check-in

Every week, the people I coach check in with me. It does not take long. We look at:

  • Training. Which sessions happened, how they felt, what went up and what felt stuck.
  • Food. What your meal tracking shows, and one thing to work on next.
  • Everything else. Sleep, stress, energy and anything coming up that might get in the way.

Then we adjust. A busy week ahead might mean two shorter sessions instead of three long ones. A plateau might mean changing an exercise or adding a little more weight. The plan fits your life, rather than your life having to fit the plan.

Why it works

Three reasons. First, small problems get caught early: one missed session is a chat, not a reason to quit. Second, you can see your progress written down week by week, which keeps you going when the mirror does not seem to change. Third, you know someone is going to ask, and that alone gets a lot of people to the gym on a wet Tuesday.

What to do if you have fallen off again

Do not wait for Monday or the first of the month. Pick the smallest thing you can do this week, like one session or one walk, and do it. Then do it again next week. Building something that lasts starts with a week you can repeat.

If you would like someone in your corner while you do it, have a look at how I work.

Stop starting over
