1:1 or small group training: which is right for you?
Both get you coached properly, but they suit different people at different times. How to choose between 1:1 personal training and small group sessions.

One of the first questions people ask me is whether they should book 1:1 sessions or join a small group. There is no wrong answer, but there is usually a better fit for where you are right now.
What 1:1 training gives you
In a 1:1 session it is just you and me. Every minute is planned around you: your goal, your body, your history and what you enjoy. I can watch every rep, change an exercise the moment something does not feel right, and push you exactly as far as you are ready to go.
1:1 tends to suit you if:
- you are brand new to the gym and want to learn the basics properly;
- you have an injury, a health condition or a long break behind you;
- you have a specific goal, like a strength target or an event;
- you feel self-conscious and want to build confidence before training around other people.
What small group training gives you
In a small group session you train alongside a few others. You still get coaching on your form, and the session is still planned, but the energy is different. There is chat between sets, a bit of friendly competition and people who notice when you do not turn up.
Small groups tend to suit you if:
- you know the basics and want structure and motivation;
- you enjoy training with others, or want to train with a friend or partner;
- you find it easier to keep going when someone is expecting you.
Why lots of people do both
It does not have to be one or the other. A common pattern is to start with some 1:1 sessions to learn the movements and build a plan, then mix in small group sessions for momentum. Some people come back to 1:1 when they want to work on something specific, like a new lift or a weak spot.
What matters more than the format
Whichever you choose, the results come from what happens between sessions: training on your own, eating in a way that supports your goal, sleeping enough, and keeping going when life gets busy. That is why I pair sessions with meal tracking and weekly check-ins. One hour a week with a coach is great. The other 167 are where the change happens.
Still not sure?
Think about the last time you stopped exercising. If it was because you did not know what to do, start with 1:1. If it was because you lost motivation, a small group might be the push you need. And if you want to talk it through, send me a message.
